<image:title>Journal - The Making of Eliza - “Read it again! Read it again!” My sister Sydne and I would chant as my Mom would read her poetry out loud to us, snuggled up in her bed. Her children’s poems made us laugh until our sides ached. She had such a wild sense of humor, a beautiful spirit. She wrote nonsense poems often inspired by my sister and I doing the darndest, little kid things.</image:title>
<image:caption>My mom always dreamed of getting her work illustrated and published. I think she even sent it in a few publishers to no avail. In 2010, however, she was diagnosed with cancer. Our whole life came tumbling down and all our priorities shifted. It didn’t help that my parents had just gotten divorced a few years prior, and then she was laid off from the job she loved before the diagnosis. Talk about a whirlwind that left us wondering what was next. She fought for three long, hard, years and passed away in 2013.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Golden owl was simply inspired by asking my sister in law what her favorite animal is. I really let loose with this one, starting with the sketch which is the dark black outline you see here. It was one of the early dark thick images I drew, a style you'll see now throughout my work.</image:caption>

Autumn is my favorite time of year i wish it could be fall for six months, and I also love jackelopes. I have a small suspicion that maybe they're real, hidden out in the desert or forest somewhere.</image:caption>

I saw a boxer with their arms down limp as they rested between matches and for some reason I thought of how rabbits will stand on their back legs. I think he's very fierce and I'd love to sell him to a boxing gym as a logo or something. I only found out later male rabbits fist fight viciously mostly over females so it's more accurate than I even knew.</image:caption>

I loved the idea and it turned into a total wester dueling duckling. For some reason the juxtaposition between the sweetness of the duckling and an act of violence is hilarious to me. He quickly became one of my favorite characters.</image:caption>
